The answers we need often lie beyond our conscious mind. Stream-of-conscious writing is a powerful technique to silence our internal critic, strip away the false self, and allow the flame of our true self to glow bright.
![]() Write for a Change Write until you fill at least 3 pages and 20 minutes has elapsed. If you become blocked just repeat what you've written until the pages are filled. Other than the commitment to write for 20 minutes, there are no rules. You need not worry about grammar, spelling, or punctuation. Keep your pages private. Let a month or 2 go by before you reread them. The fruits and benefits will emerge in your daily life. In addition to the mental, emotional, and spiritual benefits of journaling, research by Dr. James Pennebaker suggests that writing in this manner may have positive physical benefits as well. Clinical research indicates benefits like pain reduction and strengthened immune systems. Try daily stream-of-conscious writing for 30 consecutive days. Over time, insight into creative ideas for change will emerge. True healing depends on our personal capacity for change. Treatments work - or fail to work because they enhance - or fail to enhance this capacity for change. Connecting to our true self also enhances this capacity for change and is a powerful tool empowering us to discover and make necessary changes.
